Team Ireland

Dear friends – it’s official – I have been named as a member of Team Ireland for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi!

The team was announced at a press conference in Dublin today. I was unable to attend, as unfortunately the nature of my sport is that more than one day away from snow becomes detrimental to performance. I can’t wait to meet the rest of my team on Saturday and on Sunday we’ll be travelling to Sochi.

Petr and me in our new Team Ireland suits.

It has been incredibly satisfying to have all my hard work pay off. I am extremely grateful to my coach Petr Jakl for all the time he has put into this project with me. Also, Petr and I could not have done this without the generous help of so many of you. We hope to be able to thank you personally in the coming weeks. In the meantime we still have some hard work to do!

A beautiful day for a long classic ski in Obertilliach.

Working on offset technique without poles, in new soft snow is hard work!

The opening ceremonies of the Sochi games will be on Feb. 7th, I will be racing the 15km Classic on Feb. 14th, and the closing ceremonies will be on Feb. 23rd. I still don’t know of any reliable sites where the games can be watched online for anyone without a television, but I will let you know if I find some.

Today’s comic relief – even children’s toy tractors get chains for the winter in this alpine village.
