Summer 2023

After our spring travels it was back to Calgary, and enjoying the mountains in summer weather. As we have done the last several years, we enjoyed cycling on the seasonally closed section of HWY 40.

June brought orienteering and adventure racing opportunities with friends.

In July we did some hikes both new and old. Junction Creek waterfall and the Sheep River Valley / HWY 546 below:

We repeated a fantastic hike to Mt. Allan / Centennial ridge – but this time we went with friends and had two cars to be able to hike the whole ridge from North to South.

The summer flew by, and before we knew it, September brought some cooler weather. On this occasion we explored a new trail (Lesueur Ridge) in the Ghost PLUZ (public land use zone) area.

In mid-September the Harrisson family came to visit, the fine weather returned, and we did some hikes in the Highwood and Kananaskis Lakes areas.

The Jumpingpound loop is always a good option when needing to stretch the legs.

Moody skies over Upper Kananaskis Lake.

Late September brought the first snows, and we thought that we would be in for an early winter – sadly we were mistaken. This long day hike took us on a section of the Rockwall Trail (between Numa Falls, and the Floe Lake trailhead).

This area is in Kootenay National Park, a region we haven’t explored much yet.

In October the warm weather returned, and the Rossiter family took their turn visiting. We all participated in some local orienteering races, and then explored around Lake Minnewanka in full Thanksgiving splendour.

It looks like Laura has had a good race!

A perfect spot for lunch.

It was nice to have family visit during such a nice time of year.

Heading back after a good excursion along the lakeshore.

Finally more snow arrived in November, but there wasn’t much of it, and the 2023/24 ski season began as one of the worst in recent memory. We’ll see where it goes from here!
